National Heritage Week Events in Blessington Library

To mark National Heritage Week, Blessington Library will host two events on the flooding of the Liffey Valley and the construction of the Poulaphouca Resevoir.

Flooding of the Liffey Valley Talk by local archaeologist Liz Gardner on this fascinating time in the history of Poulaphouca - Blessington Library, Tuesday, 22nd August, 7.30pm.

At 10am on 3rd March 1940 the sluice gate diverting the River Liffey around the Poulaphouca Dam was closed and the Poulaphouca Reservoir began to fill. 6500 acres of land had been cleared to make way for the reservoir and 76 houses were lost to the floodwaters, including the whole townland of Ballinahown.

Flooding of the Liffey Valley Exhibition, Blessington Library, 22nd August to 9th September
This exhibition will focus on the formation of Blessington Lake through to the construction of Poulaphuca Reservoir and the flooding of the Valley in the 1940s.
On display – photographs, items of interest found near lake, location maps of submerged houses & copies of the Irish Folklore Commission survey completed by local school children at the time.
The exhibition is free to all and may be viewed during library opening hours.

Come in and borrow our new Musical Instruments

Calling all budding musicians to Blessington and Arklow libraries. We have just launched a musical instrument lending scheme. The new instruments will be available to rent by families or community music groups from Wednesday 4th July, providing an opportunity for young people to try out playing an instrument before making a financial commitment. This exciting project has been developed in collaboration between Wicklow County Council and Music Generation Wicklow and is intended to encourage young people to start playing an instrument.

For more information please download the the two documents at the bottom of this page - Rental Information Form & Rental Agreement Form.
