During the summer months of June to August Wicklow County Council operates a school book exchange programme. School book shops are set up in the Arklow, Bray and Wicklow Recycling Centres. Third level students are employed to sort school books brought to the centres by the public. The students pick out books still on the curriculum which are in good condition
These books are made available in the school book shops. Books unsuitable for reuse are recycled. The books can be purchased for a small fee of €2.00 to €3.00. The proceeds help to cover the costs of staffing the shop for the summer months.
The programme has been very successful in recent years, bringing in up to 30,000 books between the three centres, of which up to 7,000 books go back out into circulation for reuse.
