Culture Night 2016

Wicklow Culture Night - Friday 16th September 2016

On Friday 16 September, Wicklow County Arts Office invites you to take part in the annual National Culture Night programme as part of the cultural celebrations taking place throughout the country on the night. Now in its 11th year, this nationwide celebration has many exciting events taking place in communities all over Ireland. Wicklow is no exception, with over sixty exciting events lined up around the county, with something for everybody it’s not to be missed.

This year we’ve taken a new approach to make it easier for audiences to see all that Culture Night has to offer. We’ve selected locations in some of the larger towns around County Wicklow and programmed a number of events in a single area. Arklow events are located around the new Arklow Library which hosts its own events and exhibition. In Arus Lorcain there is a dance workshop for 5 to 8 years old and a theatre workshop. Solace Studio will run pottery workshops and East Wicklow Youth Services will hold arts & craft workshop while we have music on the bandstand in the park.

Blessington events are centralized with an amazing programme in the spectacular Russborough House with dancing for your little dancers, storytelling, artisans, free tours around the house, grounds and the bird of prey centre, Erica Devine will be giving advice on how to care for your art, antiques and heirlooms. The Abbey Theatre will be onsite with the acclaimed Me, Mollser. Marina Carr will be on-hand to talk about her work and the process of writing Mary Gordon, the oratorio for Wicklow Arts Office choral event for massed choirs in November. Singing in the Hippodrome will be by West Wicklow Voices who will feature in the National Concert Hall event Mary Gordon, lead by our Culture Night Ambassador Conor O’ Reilly. Of course Blessington Comhaltas in Tramway Theatre is a great option with a great programme from Blessington CCÉ if music is your passion.

In Bray the promenade is the location for a seafront exhibition, an outdoor children’s dance class, a battle of the bands, a puppet show, Sea Life arts workshops, a graffiti workshop as well as an outdoor heritage exhibition and Outpost artists interventions. There will also be a comedy, trad sessions and a free gig in some pubs. Don’t forget that Signal Arts Centre will be pulling out all the stops as usual and are always worth a look. March on Film are screening 2016’s shortlist at Wicklow Wolf Brewery and in The Well Bray Youth Services are holding a youth theatre workshop along with Mindful Drawing session for teens and a sound workshop in Seomra. Finally the ever impressive Mermaid Arts Centre has a great line up of film, visual art and music for all.

Greystones has events in the library, an outdoor flash dance session for the little folks and an a cappella trio moving along the Main Street from the Dart station but definitely don’t miss Theatre Lane which has everything from contemporary dance, music, food to artisan demos and a party for Ronnie Drew! Cap it all off by seeing Jaws in the Cove with the Outdoor Cinema Club.

Wicklow Town is busy with the Wicklow Tidy Towns saving the bees, Lorna Breen and Shira Brady return to Dominican Chapel with the Avondale Voices and violinist Matthew Wylie. As part of our Parochial Hall programme Michael Steadman will play classical guitar after Music Generation’s Samba but before a workshop by Wicklow Youth Dance Company, which leaves just enough time to catch the Boat House CCÉ or visit Kilmantin Gallery.

There are also events happening everywhere around the county. Ashford Studios is inviting emerging film makers to visit the studios for a guided tour, Alchemy are holding their ever popular event in Nun’s Cross, Rod Coyne hosts an open studio in Avoca and Aughrim can look forward to music by the Anne Devlin CCÉ. SchoolHouse for Art never disappoint in Enniskerry. Join Martin for a ‘Meeting with Kevin in Glendalough’ or Bray, Newcastle and Kilcoole crafters in Kilcoole Community Centre, visit the Courthouse Arts Centre in Tinahely for their exhibition or just join in the Seisiún Mór in Coolfancy NS.
