The app 1916WicklowLife is now available to download free of charge on android phones or tablets from the Playstore and on apple phones or ipads from the App Store.  The website version of the app can be found on www.1916wicklowlife.ie.  In this app we hope to evoke a sense of everyday life in County Wicklow during the year of the Rising through weekly updates of newspaper snippets featuring local news stories, advertisements and events as presented in the two main County Wicklow newspapers of the day –The Wicklow People and The Wicklow News-Letter.  You may find these snippets sometimes quirky, often poignant and on occasion quite amusing!  Read more

"Canadian Ambassador has Wicklow roots"

County Wicklow extended a very warm welcome recently to His Excellency Ambassador Kevin Vickers – Canadian Ambassador to Ireland.  Beginning with a tour and lunch in Wicklow’s Historic Gaol, the Ambassador was then formally received as a special guest by Wicklow County Council, and the day was completed with a trip to the set of the Vikings television series at Luggalaw.   Ambassador Vickers was born and raised in Miramichi, New Brunswick an area of Canada with deep Irish roots.  The city of Miramichi calls itself “Canada’s Irish Capital” and is home every year to Canada’s Irish Festival.  Indeed, according to Wicklow County Council’s Archives & Genealogy Service, Ambassador Vickers’ family hail from Arklow, County Wicklow!  Read more.

"Return of WWI Medals to Granddaughter of Wicklow Soldier":

It was a very emotional day for Blessington woman Vera Kavanagh. After almost 100 years, the medals awarded to her grandfather Christopher Daly (see below) for his service on the Eastern Front in WWI were returned to Mrs. Kavanagh at a reception in Tulfarris House hosted by Wicklow County Council recently.
