Arklow Municipal District recently completed a project focused on the protection and enhancement of the Abbey Wall and Abbey Lane. A prior survey in the area revealed significant archaeological findings, including 17th-century pottery and pre-1800 bones. Following the Department of Heritage's policy, these artefacts have been preserved in their original location.
This laneway, a vital pedestrian link from Castle Park to Main Street and adjacent to the Abbey Cemetery, now serves as a revitalized public space, blending historical preservation with community enhancement.
The stone paving and construction around the flowerbed were completed by Michael Bennett & Sons Building Contractors. Meanwhile, the conservation of the Abbey Wall was carried out by specialists from Kirwan Conservation Ltd., following traditional methods with a stone and lime mortar mix. They reinstated the window openings in the Abbey Wall using steel frames that reflect the original design undertaken by Stephen Keogh. These windows also allow views of the graveyard from the laneway.
Arklow Municipal District staff installed the new lighting to the wall and laneway as well as completing the works to the flowerbed. The project was overseen by District Engineer Avril Hill and Executive Engineer Damien Byrne.
In a speech, the Cathaoirleach of Arklow Municipal District, Cllr. Pat Kennedy, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I hope you all agree that this is a wonderful space, offering additional public realm opportunities that can serve as a tourist attraction, a venue for entertainment, and a hub for markets. At the same time, it beautifully preserves and maintains our connection to our heritage”.
Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, Emer O’Gorman, welcomed the project's completion, saying “it was important to conserve the Abbey Wall, and remain sensitive to its history and preserve to the artefacts found”.
Leonora Earls, District Manager of Arklow Municipal District, noted that “those who were involved in the project showed a deep respect for the area’s heritage while enhancing its value for the community”.
The Cathaoirleach also acknowledged several contributors to the project's success, including funding from SSE Renewables and Deirdre Keogh, Community Engagement Manager, who supported the Christmas lighting in the laneway. He also noted, funding from the Local Enhancement Programme, which was secured through the Arklow Town Team.
Additionally, he thanked Arklow Tidy Towns for agreeing to undertake planting and for their commitment to sensitively preserving the history of the Dominican Abbey and the Dominican Order.
Finally, the evening concluded with a beautiful vocal performance by Dynamics Vocal Ensemble.
