Wicklow County Council's Annual Christmas Decoration Prize-Giving Celebrates Creativity and Sustainability

The County Buildings in Wicklow Town were illuminated during the Annual Christmas Decoration Prize-giving Ceremony, which took place on the evening of Wednesday, 11th December. This event celebrated innovation and environmental awareness, bringing together young creators from over 20 primary schools across the county.

Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr. Paul O’Brien, acknowledged the valuable support of parents and teachers, stating, "We're thrilled to see the incredible creativity and imagination of our young participants. This event wouldn't have been possible without the dedication of our teachers and the encouragement from parents.  This competition also aligns with the wider Green Schools Programme, which has been instrumental in fostering environmental stewardship among our students, and we commend everyone involved."

The evening showcased artistic flair and enjoyment as students presented their handmade Christmas decorations, crafted from a diverse range of recycled materials—such as can openers, wine bottle corks, socks, used coffee pods, and the ubiquitous toilet roll insert. Each creation demonstrated a unique approach to repurposing discarded items in innovative ways.

Emer O'Gorman, Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, emphasised the Council's commitment to sustainability, stating, "Our schools through their work and by entering and supporting this annual competition are playing a part in the continued implementation of Co. Wicklow’s Climate Action Plan. The plan is a pivotal step towards a more sustainable future for County Wicklow. This plan underscores our commitment to nurturing a circular economy, reducing waste, and promoting sustainable practices across our community. The young participants in tonight's event have exemplified how creativity and imagination can lead us towards a more thoughtful and sustainable way of celebrating the festive season."

The event not only highlighted the artistic abilities of the young creators but also emphasised the importance of sustainable living and creative giving during the Christmas season. The County Council applauded the efforts of all participants, recognising their role in inspiring a more mindful and eco-conscious community.

The Christmas Decoration Prize-giving Ceremony serves as a reminder that creativity and sustainability can go hand in hand, shaping a brighter, greener future for County Wicklow.
