A young persons’ publication exploring the history of Wicklow Gaol, has been developed as part of Wicklow County Council’s Decade of Centenaries programme, supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport & Media.
Thousands of men, women and children passed through the gates of Wicklow Gaol. Common criminals and Irish rebels alike endured painful punishment, corrupt gaolers and horrendous conditions. During major events in Irish history, including the 1798 rebellion, the Great Famine and the Civil War many local and national heroes were imprisoned within its walls. Some prisoners were executed there; others were transported to faraway lands. Classroom sets
A classroom set of Wicklow Gaol: Three Centuries of Incredible Irish History has been presented to each primary school in County Wicklow, including an as Gaeilge version of the publication. You can also find copies in your local County Wicklow library as well as e-versions as below.
Workshops
The book’s author Carmel Ui Cheallaigh and the book’s illustrator Jimmy Burns are delivering workshops on the publication in various libraries around the county. Children are invited to create a “Wanted Poster” and explore the history of Wicklow Gaol in these engaging and interactive workshops.
