Co. Wicklow has one of the highest levels of woodlands of any county in Ireland, with over 20% under tree cover. While much of the county’s woodlands has its origins in the establishment of non-native commercial plantations since the 1950s, there are also extensive areas of native and semi-natural woodlands.
As a natural heritage resource, woodlands are of high value for biodiversity, contribute significantly to our historic landscape character, and provide important areas for recreation and leisure amenities.
