Wicklow County Council encourages young readers to surf into reading with Summer Stars 2024

Thursday, 13th June 2024

Get ready for a summer filled with literary adventures! Summer Stars 2024, Ireland's beloved national summer reading programme for children, kicked off last week on Tuesday, 4th June in all of our public libraries, and runs until August 31st.

Wicklow County Council Library Service and libraries across the country invite all children to join this exciting programme and discover the joy of reading and writing.

Participation in the Summer Stars Programme is completely free. Children can visit their local library to pick up a Summer Stars reading booklet and track their progress. Libraries will also be hosting a variety of engaging events and activities throughout the summer, making reading an even more enjoyable experience.

Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr. Aoife Flynn Kennedy on hearing about the initiative for Summer Stars 2024 said, "Our libraries are vibrant community hubs, and Summer Stars is a wonderful example of their commitment to fostering a love of reading. We encourage all parents and guardians to bring their children to their local library and explore the wide variety of books and activities available."

This is the 8th year that Wicklow County Library Service has run with the Summer Stars programme and every year it has grown in popularity with children of all ages seizing the opportunity to participate.

Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council Emer O’Gorman, when commenting on the programme said, "Summer Stars is a fantastic initiative that fosters a love for reading in our young people. Wicklow County Council is proud to support this programme and the dedicated library staff who make it such a success."

Director of Services for Climate, Environment, Recreation and Amenity Theresa O'Brien echoed this sentiment, highlighting the programme's inclusivity saying "Summer Stars is open to all children, regardless of their reading level. Every child who reads even one book or even an e-book is considered to have completed the programme. It's a fun and rewarding way to keep young minds engaged over the summer break."
