Limited Edition Library Card Launch

In partnership with the Wicklow Barn Owl Group, Wicklow Library Service invites the public to explore the remarkable lifecycle of Barn Owls at this one-of-a-kind event. Taking place at Rathdrum Library during Heritage Week on Wednesday 21st August 6-8 pm, the event will feature an interesting workshop, “Poo & Pellets,” where attendees can learn about the Barn Owl’s unique digestive system and examine the regurgitated pellets that reveal what these majestic birds have been eating. By exploring the fur, feathers, teeth, and bones within the pellets, participants will gain insights into the health of prey species in our countryside.

The event will also serve as the official launch of the new Barn Owl-themed Wicklow County Library Card. This card not only celebrates the Barn Owl, a bird of conservation concern, but also serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting and understanding our local wildlife. A QR code on the card will take library user to the County Wicklow Heritage page to find more information on the Barn Owl Project.

Speaking ahead of this event, Paul O’Brien, Cathaoirleach for Wicklow County Council said  "The launch of the new Barn Owl-themed library card is a celebration of both literacy and local wildlife. By raising awareness of the Barn Owl’s plight, we hope to inspire our community to take an active role in conservation while enjoying the many resources our libraries offer."

The Barn Owl project in Wicklow is a vital initiative, launched by the Wicklow County Council in partnership with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) in 2022. The project focuses on gathering Barn Owl sightings across Wicklow and collaborating with farmers, landowners, Birdwatch Ireland, and local communities to enhance breeding success through the installation and monitoring of artificial nest boxes.  Deirdre Burns, Heritage Officer for WCC is very passionate about this initiative, stating “Barn Owls are a unique part of our natural and cultural heritage, and through this partnership with Wicklow Library Service, we’re excited to engage the public in their conservation. Every sighting reported and every nest box installed brings us one step closer to securing the future of these beautiful birds in Wicklow."

By featuring the Barn Owl as the new mascot on their library cards, Wicklow County Council Library Service aims to raise awareness about this threatened species and highlight the critical role that every community member can play in conservation efforts. The Director of Services for CERA , Theresa O’Brien demonstrated her enthusiasm for the limited edition card, saying “ The library’s connection to the Barn Owl project shows commitment to not only fostering a love for reading and learning but also encouraging environmental stewardship among our patrons. “

Chief Executive of WCC, Emer O’Gorman sees this initiative as an opportunity for further support of the Sustainable Development Goals, stating that “this initiative aligns with Goal 15, which calls for the protection and promotion of sustainable use for our ecosystems, supporting wildlife and caring for the natural world”
